Pasco County homeowners whose homes were damaged by Hurricane Milton or Hurricane Helene in 2024 can still apply for free repairs through Rebuilding Together Greater Florida, a nonprofit that has restored more than 1,500 homes across the Tampa Bay area since the storms. The organization serves all of Pasco County, including Wesley Chapel, through its Central West District.
One of those homeowners is Curtis Logan, a 44-year-old Army veteran and Purple Heart recipient who lives in Holiday.
Logan was one of three soldiers caught in a roadside bomb attack in Iraq in 2006. He was the only survivor. The blast broke every bone in his legs and ankles, destroyed both Achilles tendons, took a toe and his right calf muscle. Doctors told him he might never walk again. He has undergone 44 surgeries since.
Then Hurricane Milton in 2024 tore into his roof. Logan was recovering from yet another surgery when the leaking started. He doesn't often ask for help, he told Tampa Bay 28 on Friday, Aug. 7, but he eventually connected with Rebuilding Together Greater Florida. The nonprofit repaired his roof and converted his shower to wheelchair accessible at no cost.
Logan, a father of four, now coaches youth sports and has won three state championships in disc golf, a sport he took up after being told he would never walk.
"I should be more vocal about it for other people, pay homage to the ones who didn't make it when I came back, and I got lucky," Logan said of his Purple Heart, reflecting on National Purple Heart Day.
Who qualifies
Pasco County homeowners can apply for hurricane repairs at rtgfl.org/hurricane. Eligibility requires household income at or below 120% of the area median income, ownership of the home, no other residential properties and current mortgage and tax payments. CEO Jose Garcia told Tampa Bay 28 on July 30 that the organization still has grant funding available for qualifying homeowners. Services range from roof and window replacement to mold removal, electrical work, plumbing and accessibility modifications like grab bars and wheelchair-accessible showers.
Rebuilding Together Greater Florida, a registered 501(c)(3) headquartered in Tampa, has operated for more than 25 years and serves more than 29 counties across Florida.
