Crews are tearing up and repaving 7.3 miles of two of Wesley Chapel's busiest roads, and drivers should expect overnight lane closures for the next year.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) launched a $19.8 million milling and resurfacing project covering State Road 56 (SR 56) and Bruce B. Downs Boulevard in late August. The work stretches about 3.8 miles along SR 56, from west of Bruce B. Downs to Meadow Pointe Boulevard, and about 3.5 miles up Bruce B. Downs from SR 56 toward State Road 54. Preferred Materials Inc. is the contractor. FDOT expects the project to wrap up in fall 2027.

The two corridors form an L-shape through the heart of Wesley Chapel, carrying some of the area's heaviest school, commuter, shopping and medical traffic on both sides of Interstate 75.

Overnight lane closures scheduled through fall

FDOT is scheduling the heaviest work overnight to limit daytime disruption. According to the Wesley Chapel Community Website, the first closures ran on Bruce B. Downs between SR 56 and Chancey Road/Mystic Oak Boulevard on the nights of Aug. 25 through Aug. 27. A second round of closures on Bruce B. Downs, from SR 56 to Landry Lane, was scheduled for the nights of Aug. 30 through Sept. 3, from 8:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.

All closures are weather permitting.

A heavy storm can push a night's work to the next available window. FDOT has not published a full closure calendar for the fall and winter. The department posts schedules week by week, so residents planning late-night trips through the corridor should check for updates regularly.

Meadow Pointe merge area being reworked

The project is not widening either road. But one intersection is changing.

Near SR 56 and Meadow Pointe Boulevard, crews will modify the merge area and roadway transitions to create two 12-foot lanes for left-turn movements onto SR 56. According to a July 28 preview on the Wesley Chapel Community Website, FDOT described the change as an adjustment to safely handle added left-turn traffic at that location.

Beyond the repaving and the Meadow Pointe fix, the contract includes intersection safety improvements at SR 56 and Bruce B. Downs, ADA upgrades at crossings and ramps, traffic signal work, overhead lighting and minor drainage improvements.
