Lane closures on Bruce B. Downs Boulevard will continue Wednesday, Sept. 30, and Thursday, Oct. 1, as crews repave the corridor through Wesley Chapel.
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has been closing lanes nightly from 8:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. since Sunday, Sept. 27. The affected stretch runs from about 1.5 miles north of State Road 56 south to Landry Lane, according to the FDOT project page.
The northbound right-turn lane on Bruce B. Downs approaching the SR 56 intersection is also shut down during those hours. Drivers making that right turn must use the through lane instead.
The closures are part of a $19.8 million resurfacing project covering 7.3 miles across two connected corridors: SR 56 from west of Bruce B. Downs to east of Meadow Pointe Boulevard, and Bruce B. Downs from SR 56 north to just south of SR 54/Wesley Chapel Boulevard. Preferred Materials, Inc. is the contractor. Construction started in late August and is expected to finish in fall 2027.
The project does not add through lanes to either road. Its stated purpose is to preserve and extend the life of existing pavement.
Beyond the repaving, FDOT plans to reconfigure the Meadow Pointe Boulevard merge onto SR 56 into two 12-foot lanes to ease backups during heavy left-turn periods, according to the Wesley Chapel Community Website. The SR 56 and Bruce B. Downs intersection will also get ADA upgrades, drainage work, signal upgrades and new overhead lighting.
Closure schedules are set week to week and can shift with weather. FDOT has not announced which segment will be closed after Thursday, Oct. 1. According to the agency's project listing, work will continue moving along both roads through fall 2027.
Residents can check updated nightly closure listings at fdottampabay.com or subscribe to email alerts for the project through the FDOT project page. The project contact is John McShaffrey at 813-975-6930. The FDOT media contact is Kris Carson at 813-975-6060.
