BayCare Health System, which operates an 86-bed hospital on Bruce B. Downs Boulevard in Wesley Chapel, earned the No. 21 spot on People magazine's 2026 Companies That Care list, the health system announced Tuesday, Aug. 11. It is the highest-ranked health care system in Florida on this year's list.
The recognition marks BayCare's sixth appearance on the annual ranking, which is compiled by Great Place To Work and People based on more than 1.3 million employee survey responses from companies representing over 7.3 million U.S. workers.
"This recognition belongs to BayCare's team members, who are our greatest asset," BayCare President and CEO Stephanie Conners said in a statement. "Every day, they make the difference in the way they care for our patients, support one another and strengthen our communities."
Only four Florida companies and nine hospital systems nationwide made the 2026 list, according to a separate report from South Florida Hospital News. Rankings are derived from 60 employee-experience questions within the Great Place To Work Trust Index Survey, plus essays submitted by participating companies.
Wesley Chapel hospital's revenue nearly doubled in a year
BayCare Hospital Wesley Chapel opened in March 2023 at 4501 Bruce B. Downs Blvd. after a $246 million investment. The 318,000-square-foot facility hired hundreds of team members at launch and serves Pasco, Hernando and northern Hillsborough counties with emergency care, surgical services, cardiac catheterization, imaging and outpatient services.
The campus has grown fast. Program service revenues roughly doubled from $42.9 million in fiscal year 2023 to $86.4 million in fiscal year 2024, according to IRS Form 990 filings.
BayCare's 16-hospital system racks up additional workplace honors
BayCare operates 16 hospitals across the Tampa Bay and central Florida regions. The not-for-profit system has also been named a USA Today Top Workplace for three consecutive years and ranked 22nd nationally on the 2025 Fortune Best Workplaces in Health Care list.
Michael C. Bush, CEO of Great Place To Work, said the best workplaces are finding ways to support employees under pressure. "When employees feel that sense of care, they do incredible things," he said.
