A $19.8 million road project launching Aug. 25 on Wesley Chapel's two busiest corridors will do more than lay fresh asphalt. The Florida Department of Transportation plans to reconfigure the Meadow Pointe Boulevard merge onto State Road 56, upgrade traffic signals, improve drainage and install new overhead lighting across 7.3 miles of State Road 56 and Bruce B. Downs Boulevard.
Construction will stretch through fall 2027.
No lane closure schedule has been released.
FDOT Combines Two Road Segments Into a Single Contract
FDOT combined two segments into a single construction contract awarded to Preferred Materials Inc.:
- State Road 56: approximately 3.8 miles from west of Bruce B. Downs Boulevard to east of Meadow Pointe Boulevard
- Bruce B. Downs Boulevard (State Road 581): approximately 3.5 miles from State Road 56 north to State Road 54
According to FDOT's project page, the primary goal is to preserve existing pavement before significant deterioration sets in. The number of through lanes on both roads will stay the same.
Meadow Pointe Merge Will Get Two Widened Turn Lanes
The biggest operational change sits at the Meadow Pointe Boulevard merge onto State Road 56. FDOT will reconfigure the merge area and roadway transitions to create two 12-foot lanes that handle heavy left-turn traffic onto State Road 56. Afternoon peak-hour congestion at that spot has been a persistent complaint for drivers heading west toward Interstate 75.
The project also includes intersection safety improvements at the State Road 56 and Bruce B. Downs intersection, ADA accessibility upgrades at crossings and ramps, minor drainage work, traffic signal upgrades and new overhead lighting.
Construction Starts Just 12 Days Into the New School Year
Pasco County Schools' first day for the 2026-27 year is Thursday, Aug. 13. Construction begins 12 days later. Neither FDOT nor the school district has said whether school-hour restrictions will apply to daytime work zones on these corridors.
As The Wesley Chapel Loop reported Aug. 4, similar resurfacing contracts in Pasco County have shifted the heaviest lane work to overnight hours, but FDOT has not confirmed that approach for this project.
Closure Schedule and Work Hours Still Unannounced
As of Aug. 5, FDOT's project page lists no closures. The department has not released work hours, a construction sequence or confirmation of which corridor crews will tackle first. A pre-construction notice spelling out initial work zones and traffic impacts is expected closer to the Aug. 25 start date.
