Pasco County Animal Services has stopped accepting new dogs and cats after its shelter population topped 100% capacity.

The agency announced the temporary intake suspension on Friday, Nov. 6. Dog adoption fees remain waived, and the shelter is asking Pasco County residents to adopt, foster or donate pet food to help free up kennel space, Pasco News reported.

The suspension means the shelter is not accepting new animals until space opens up. That matters for Wesley Chapel pet owners and anyone across the county looking to bring in a stray or surrendered animal.

Why the shelter closed its doors

Accepting more animals would compromise the space, care and attention staff and volunteers can provide, the agency said, according to Pasco News. Intakes will resume once adequate kennel space becomes available. No reopening date has been set.

How residents can help

The shelter listed several ways the public can pitch in:

  • Adopt. Dog adoption fees remain waived. The agency did not say whether cat fees have changed.
  • Foster. Taking an animal home temporarily frees a kennel for another pet.
  • Donate food. The shelter needs dry and wet dog and cat food. Donations can be dropped off or delivered to the shelter at 19640 Dogpatch Lane in Land O' Lakes, according to the agency's Facebook page.

Residents can reach Pasco County Animal Services at 813-929-1212 or [email protected].

Emergencies still get a response

The intake pause does not apply to animal cruelty cases. Suspected cruelty, neglect, abuse or other criminal activity should be reported to the Pasco Sheriff's Office at 727-847-8102, option 7. For emergencies requiring an immediate response, call 911.
