Wiregrass Ranch took sole possession of first place in Class 5A-District 7 with a 16-13 overtime victory over Land O' Lakes on Friday, Oct. 9, at Wiregrass Ranch High School in Wesley Chapel.

Both teams entered the matchup undefeated in district play at 2-0, making it a pivotal game in the race for the district championship.

The Bulls improved to 3-0 in district play and 3-4 overall, while the Gators fell to 2-1 in the district and 4-3 overall.

Pasco County Schools highlighted the overtime victory in an Instagram post Friday night. The final score is also confirmed by MaxPreps.

Defense sets up pivotal district victory

The low-scoring contest brought together two teams known for their defensive play.

Entering the game, Wiregrass Ranch had recorded 19 sacks, six interceptions and 10 fumble recoveries through six games, according to the Tampa Bay Beacons.

Senior defensive end Chase Cobb led the Bulls' defensive front with 25 tackles, including 10 for loss, and five sacks during that stretch.

Land O' Lakes entered with a rushing attack led by junior running back Elisha Melendez, who had gained 628 yards and scored six touchdowns on 142 carries.

The Gators also used a two-quarterback rotation featuring sophomore Luke Falco, a transfer from Steinbrenner, and junior Canon West.

Following Land O' Lakes' 51-15 victory over Wharton on Sept. 25, coach Dan Goodspeed praised the flexibility of having two quarterbacks.

"You don't often get that in high school football," Goodspeed said, according to the Tampa Bay Beacons.

Goodspeed, a former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive lineman, is in his fifth season leading the Gators.

Bulls control district race with two games remaining

The victory puts Wiregrass Ranch in a favorable position in the district standings with two conference games remaining.

Coach Mark Kantor's team is seeking another postseason appearance after overcoming an 0-4 start in 2025 to reach the playoffs. The Bulls' season ended with a 42-41 overtime loss to Palmetto in the opening round.

Wiregrass Ranch now holds a one-game lead over Land O' Lakes and Sunlake, both 2-1 in district play.
