Kirkland Ranch Academy of Innovation played its first varsity game Aug. 18, a volleyball match against Anclote in Wesley Chapel.

The 1,008-student magnet school launched volleyball and boys and girls cross country this fall after a planning process that began in 2025. Principal Danielle Castro told the Tampa Bay Beacons that more than 30% of the student body had been competing at other schools because Kirkland Ranch offered no athletics. The FHSAA requires students to play for their home school when it offers their sport, pulling athletes back from Cypress Creek, Sunlake, Zephyrhills and Pasco.

That rule created awkward conversations with seniors who had spent three years building bonds at other programs.

"You know, the harder part was talking to some of our seniors who have played at other schools for three years and saying, 'You have to play for us now,'" Castro said.

She framed the switch as a chance for seniors to become founding athletes. Castro and Athletic Assistant Principal Bryan Thomas, both Zephyrhills High alumni, led the rollout.

The cross country team, coached by Paul Lefebvre, debuted Aug. 23 at the Jim Ryun Invitation in Lakeland. Sophomore Micah Oliver, who advanced to the state meet last year while running for Cypress Creek, finished 10th overall. The Navigator boys placed 15th out of 35 teams.

On the volleyball side, coach Micah Berning told the Beacons her squad has enjoyed building new traditions in a brand-new gymnasium. The roster includes about nine players who competed at other schools last season. Key players include freshman Leticia Yanes da Silva, outside hitter Karsen Thompson, middle Annie Viamonte and senior setter Nayari Ramirez Ayala.

The Pasco County School Board reviewed the athletic expansion at a May 19 workshop. The district's high school athletics programs serve more than 8,300 students. Wendell Krinn Technical High School also launched its first teams this fall.

Boys and girls basketball, wrestling, competitive cheerleading and girls weightlifting will debut this winter. Boys weightlifting follows in the spring. Tennis is expected in the 2027-28 school year. The school has no outdoor fields, so football, soccer, track, baseball and softball are not in the plans.

State wrestling champion Paisley Murphy, a Kirkland Ranch student who previously competed for Sunlake, is among the athletes set to join the Navigators' wrestling program this winter.
