Amazon is building out a delivery facility at the North Tampa Bay 75 Business Center on Old Pasco Road in Wesley Chapel, positioning products closer to local drivers for faster delivery routes.
The facility will focus on getting frequently ordered items to local drivers rather than storing products for long-distance shipping, The Wesley Chapel Loop reported Wednesday, Aug. 26. Automated systems will move products through the building and prepare orders for delivery, including everyday household goods and groceries.
Once packages are ready, they go directly to local delivery routes instead of traveling through a larger distribution network farther away.
The details remain sparse. Amazon has not disclosed the facility's square footage, opening date or how many jobs it will create.
Second Pasco County facility
The Old Pasco Road hub is Amazon's second logistics operation in Pasco County. The company purchased a 68-acre site off FL-52 in January 2022 for a 517,220-square-foot Robotic Sortation Center, according to the Pasco Economic Development Council. That $150 million mid-mile facility employs 500 people and uses line-haul trucks on I-75 to move shipments across the Southeast.
The new Wesley Chapel operation serves a different purpose. Where the FL-52 center sorts packages headed to multiple destinations, the Old Pasco Road facility operates as a last-mile hub, putting products close to customers so drivers can complete deliveries faster.
Sam Blatt, Amazon's economic development manager, said in a January 2022 Pasco EDC press release that "Pasco County was a natural fit for Amazon's new sort center."
Growing corridor
The North Tampa Bay 75 Business Center sits less than half a mile from I-75. Developed by Rooker Co. with Penny for Pasco funding, the complex was completed in 2023 and includes multiple buildings along Old Pasco Road, according to a Pasco EDC press release. The Soule Co., a woman-owned medical supply manufacturer, already occupies 127,820 square feet there.
The area is also in the middle of a $22 million road widening project on Old Pasco Road. The 1.4-mile stretch from south of Sonny Drive to north of Overpass Road is adding two travel lanes, a central median, sidewalk and multi-use path. The project began in January 2024.
Nationally, Amazon is investing $4 billion to bring same-day and next-day delivery to more than 4,000 smaller cities and rural areas, according to an industry analysis by Emplicit. The company uses AI-driven demand forecasting to stock products closer to customers, cutting the distance between fulfillment centers and buyers by nearly 10% year over year.
No opening timeline or public hearing dates have been announced for the Wesley Chapel facility.
