Wesley Chapel drivers face overnight lane closures at State Road 56 and Bruce B. Downs Boulevard through Thursday night, Oct. 29, while a separate Interstate 75 project in Hillsborough County has closures scheduled into December.

SR 56 work this week

The Florida Department of Transportation's project notice lists right-lane closures on SR 56 at Bruce B. Downs and on Bruce B. Downs approaching and through the intersection from 8:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. The overnight schedule began Oct. 25 and runs through Oct. 29, with the final overnight closure ending Friday morning.

The SR 56 right-turn lane onto northbound Bruce B. Downs is also scheduled to close from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday, Oct. 30. Right turns remain available from the right through lane.

The closures accompany a $19.8 million resurfacing contract covering 7.3 miles of the two roads. Preferred Materials Inc. began construction Aug. 24; FDOT estimates completion in fall 2027. The work includes intersection safety improvements, accessibility upgrades, drainage, signals and lighting.

I-75 closures farther south

FDOT's closure list schedules I-75 lane closures between the Harney Road overpass and Tampa Bypass Canal from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., Oct. 25 through Dec. 11.

This segment is in Hillsborough County, south of Wesley Chapel. FDOT identifies the work as part of its I-75 widening project from the Tampa Bypass Canal to Fowler Avenue.

The notices describe lane restrictions, not a full shutdown of either highway. Drivers should allow extra travel time and check FDOT's latest notices before departing because construction schedules can change.

Residents can subscribe to project alerts through FDOT's website. Questions about the SR 56 and Bruce B. Downs work can be directed to John McShaffrey at 813-975-6930.
