Wesley Chapel kids now have a direct line to NHL-level coaching without leaving Pasco County.

The Tampa Bay Jr. Lightning, the Lightning organization's first directly operated youth hockey program, held its inaugural season kickoff Aug. 15 at AdventHealth Center Ice, according to Wesley Chapel Biz. Players toured newly renovated locker rooms, tried on uniforms and hit the ice for skills sessions to open the 2026-27 season.

The program fields a Tier 1 (AAA) boys division and a Tier 2 (AA) girls division, both approved by USA Hockey. The boys side includes two tournament teams at 9U and 10U and six full-season teams from 11U through 16U, with the 13U-16U squads holding Tier 1 National Bound status. Boys teams will train three days a week at AdventHealth Center Ice and Power-Pole Arena. Girls teams will use those facilities plus additional local rinks depending on age group.

The Lightning announced the program in February after receiving USA Hockey approval. In that announcement, the Lightning said the Jr. Lightning will prioritize weekday training, professional coaching, player-centric development and cost efficiency, built around USA Hockey's Athlete Development Model.

Lightning alumni staff the program

The coaching and operations roster reads like a Lightning alumni directory. Braydon Coburn, a defenseman who played 983 NHL games across 15 seasons and hoisted the Stanley Cup with Tampa Bay in 2020, works in hockey operations alongside former forward John Tucker. Board of directors president Josh Dreith is joined by board members Elizabeth Frazier and Mathieu Garon, a former NHL goaltender who appeared in 341 games over a career spanning 2000 to 2013.

Other Lightning alumni serving as on-ice coaches include Jassen Cullimore, Adam Hall, Glen Metropolit, Nikita Alexeev and Stan Neckar. That's eight former pros on staff.

Tyler Watkins manages the Tier 1 boys program. Aaron Humphrey and Kelley Steadman manage the Tier 2 girls program.

Two players earn national camp invites

Results came fast. Two Jr. Lightning players, identified by the Lightning as Kimmel and LaBella, were selected in July to attend national USA Hockey camps, with selection potentially earning future invitations to represent Team USA.

What it means locally

AdventHealth Center Ice, the Southeast's largest ice sports facility at more than 150,000 square feet with five sheets of ice, already hosts 16 youth travel teams, 12 high school teams and the Tampa Bay Crunch program. The Jr. Lightning adds the area's first AAA-level program with a direct NHL organizational tie.

The 2026-27 game schedule has not yet been released.
